What motions can the scapulothoracic joint perform?
Protraction, retraction, elevation, depression, upward rotation, and downward rotation
What are the two muscles in the scapulothoracic joint that aren’t posterior?
Serratus anterior (lateral) and pectoralis minor (anterior)
What scapulothoracic joint muscles perform protraction?
Serratus anterior and pectoralis minor
What scapulothoracic joint muscles perform retraction?
Upper trapezius, middle trapezius, lower trapezius, and rhomboids
What scapulothoracic joint muscles perform elevation?
Upper trapezius, levator scapula, and rhomboids
What scapulothoracic joint muscles perform depression?
Lower trapezius and pectoralis minor
What scapulothoracic joint muscles perform upward rotation?
Upper trapezius, middle trapezius, lower trapezius, and serratus anterior
What scapulothoracic joint muscles perform downward rotation?
Levator scapula, rhomboids, and pectoralis minor
Upper Trapezius
Origin: occipital protuberance and spinous processes of C1-C6. Insertion: lateral third of clavicle and acromion process.
Middle Trapezius
Origin: spinous processes of C7-T3. Insertion: acromion process and spine of scapula.
Lower Trapezius
Origin: spinous processes of T4-T12. Insertion: spine of scapula.
Levator Scapula
Origin: transverse processes of C1-C5. Insertion: superior angle and superior vertebral border.
Rhomboids
Origin: spinous processes of C7-T5. Insertion: vertebral border of scapula and inferior angle.
Serratus Anterior
Origin: lateral surface of 1-8 ribs. Insertion: anterior surface of vertebral border.
Pectoralis Minor
Origin: anterior surface of 3-5 ribs. Insertion: coracoid process.
