quadriceps
origin: femur insertion: patella tendon
rectus femoris
is in the middle of the thigh and covers much of the other three quad muscles. This is the most superficial quad muscle, meaning it is closest to the surface of your skin.
vastus lateralis
is on the outer side of the thigh. It is the largest and most powerful quad muscle.
vastus intermedius
is between the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis. It is the deepest quad muscle, covered entirely by the rectus femoris.
vastus medialis
is on the inner part of the thigh. It is the smallest quad muscle.
