Rias

• drowned non-glaciated valleys

• As the area becomes flooded the coast becomes indented and higher parts of the surrounding valley may become islands

• V-shaped cross section and deeper towards the sea

• Have dendritic drainage patterns

• Usually estuaries

DALMATION coastlines

• formed when rivers flow almost parallel to the coast

• Concordant coastlines

• When concordant coasts are submerged and parts of it are eroded parallel to the coast leaving islands

Fjords

• drown glacial valleys

• Deep long narrow inlets with steep and straight sides

• When glaciers retreat the sea drowns the valley

• icefjiord in Greenland - 10,000 years ago the ice melted creating the fjord

FJARDS

• drowned glacial lowlands

• Occur in glaciated low relief areas
