Addition (transition category)
Words that add similar or extra information, e.g., furthermore, also, moreover, in addition.
Contrast (transition category)
Words that highlight differences or opposition, e.g., however, on the other hand, nevertheless.
Cause & Effect (transition category)
Words that show reasons and results, e.g., therefore, thus, consequently, as a result.
Examples (transition category)
Words that introduce specific instances, e.g., for example, for instance, such as.
Emphasis (transition category)
Words that stress importance, e.g., indeed, in fact, above all, notably.
Sequence/Time (transition category)
Words that indicate order or timing, e.g., first, next, meanwhile, finally, subsequently.
Comparison (transition category)
Words that draw similarities, e.g., likewise, similarly, in the same way.
Conclusion (transition category)
Words that summarize or wrap up ideas, e.g., in conclusion, overall, to summarize.
Ambiguous
Unclear or having more than one meaning.
Advocate
To publicly support a cause or idea.
Convey
To communicate or express something.
Undermine
To weaken or damage something gradually.
Imply
To suggest without stating directly.
Substantiate
To provide evidence or support for a claim.
Contend
To argue or assert something is true.
Reinforce
To strengthen or support.
Assert
To state something confidently or forcefully.
Refute
To prove something to be false.
Prevalent
Widespread; commonly occurring.
Acknowledge
To accept or recognize something.
Consequence
A result or effect of an action.
Subtle
Not obvious; delicate or precise.
Connotation
The implied or emotional meaning of a word.
Context Clues
Hints (definitions, synonyms/antonyms, examples, transition words) that help deduce a word’s meaning.
