Pure Substance
A material with a homogeneous appearance and specific properties that distinguish it from all other substances.
Element
A pure substance made of only one type of atom, such as oxygen.
Compound
A pure substance made of a mixture of different types of atoms, such as water (H2O).
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances where the chemical identities remain unchanged, like mud.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture that can be distinguished with the naked eye, where the components are not evenly distributed, as in a granola bar.
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture that can only be distinguished using a light microscope, such as milk.
Solution
A homogeneous mixture where the components are evenly distributed and cannot be distinguished even under a light microscope, like vinegar.
Suspension
A mixture containing large particles that are visible and can be seen floating, such as mustard.
Colloid
A mixture where two substances do not dissolve, but the particles are small enough to remain suspended and cannot separate, like mayonnaise.
Composite Materials
A mixture of multiple mixtures, such as blood.
Mechanical Mixture
A mixture that can be separated by hand, like a salad.
