What is normative conformity?
Yielding to group pressure because a person wants to fit in with a group
What is informational conformity?
When a person lacks knowledge and looks to a group for guidance
What is ingratiational conformity?
A person conforms to impress or gain favor/acceptance from other people
What is socialization?
The lifelong process of how people develop attitudes, beliefs, and behavior patterns expected of a specific society.
What are the agents of socialization?
The family, the school, peer groups, media, and the workplace
What are characteristics of cults?
Charismatic leader, use of mind control, sexual or financial exploitation
What are methods of introduction into a cult?
Crossroads, love bomb, creating a new reality, identifying an enemy, and using peer pressure
What are folkways (norms)?
Customs that we follow but are often not written down; we learn them through intuition as we grow up
What are mores?
Moral norms. If you break them, you would be seen as not just bad taste, but immoral and are often linked to religious rules.
What are laws?
Norms that are identified as legal or illegal; the government has decided these are so important that if you break them you can get in trouble.
What are taboos?
Negative norms that people find offensive and socially inappropriate if you are caught doing them
What was the Stanford prison experiment?
The Stanford Prison Experiment showed how people quickly conform to roles of power or submission in a fake prison, leading to abusive behavior. It ended early due to ethical concerns.
What went wrong with the Stanford prison experiment?
The lead researcher acted as the prison superintendent, which caused lots of bias; guards were encouraged to be harsh
What was the Milgram experiment?
The Milgram Experiment tested obedience to authority; participants were instructed to give what they believed were painful electric shocks to another person.
What was the Asch line test?
The Asch Experiment studied conformity in groups where participants were asked to match line lengths
What did the Asch line test show?
Peer pressure can influence people to go against their own judgment
