The initial impression of the main characters in all three texts is important in the way the theme is introduced. How they are viewed by others in the opening moment contributes to their initial identity. What’s interesting is that some characters accept identities handed to them, others fail against how they are perceived and endeavour to find a new identity.

Character development reveals much about the theme of identity. The potential for change or the lack of potential to change is significant in how a persons true identity unfolds.

The truth about a persons identity occurs in a moment of crisis. Each character encounters moments of revelation that tests or rigidly confirms their identities.

The final image often reveals whether or not there is redemption or resolution for the character and their identity. In two texts there is ni such resolution. However in LB there is a positive resolution to the theme of identity
