Phospholipid Bilayer
A double layer of phospholipids that makes up the cell membrane, providing a barrier to most water-soluble substances.
Fluid Mosaic Model
A model that describes the structure of cell membranes as a mosaic of various proteins that float in or on the fluid lipid bilayer.
Membrane Protein
Proteins that are associated with or embedded in the cell membrane, playing key roles in transport, signaling, and structure.
Passive Transport
The movement of molecules across the cell membrane without the need for energy input.
Active Transport
The movement of molecules across a membrane from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration, requiring energy.
Diffusion
The process by which molecules spread from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.
Osmosis
The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane.
Endocytosis
The process by which cells engulf materials from the outside by folding the cell membrane inward.
Exocytosis
The process of vesicles fusing with the plasma membrane to release their contents outside the cell.
Selectively Permeable
A property of cell membranes that allows certain molecules to pass through while blocking others.
