1697 Badging of the Poor Law
Act required everyone getting welfare, including the wife and kids of the head of the household, to wear a badge on their right shoulder.
1697 Badging of the Poor Law MEANS
The badge was seen as a way to prevent what we now call the "welfare trap" or "poverty trap," where people might choose to stay on benefits instead of working.
