Scientific Method
A logical, systematic framework scientists use to make observations, gather data, and develop explanations for observed patterns.
Observation
The first step of the scientific method; noticing and describing phenomena or events using the senses or existing information.
Hypothesis
A tentative, testable explanation for an observation, based on prior research or knowledge.
Experiment
A controlled procedure carried out to test a hypothesis by manipulating variables and collecting data.
Qualitative Data
Non-numerical information gathered during an experiment, such as descriptions, colors, or behaviors.
Quantitative Data
Numerical measurements collected during an experiment, such as counts, lengths, or temperatures.
Variable
Any factor that can change in an experiment.
Independent Variable
The variable deliberately manipulated by the scientist to observe its effect.
Dependent Variable
The variable that is measured; it responds to changes in the independent variable.
Conclusion
A judgment stating whether the experimental results support or refute the hypothesis.
Scientific Literature
Published research findings and articles that provide background knowledge for forming hypotheses.
