Figurative Language
Language that expresses ideas in a non-literal way.
Metaphor
A direct comparison between two unlike things (no like or as).
Simile
A comparison using like or as.
Extended Metaphor
A metaphor that is developed over multiple lines or ideas.
Mixed Metaphor
Two or more inconsistent metaphors used together. Two or more inconsistent metaphors used together.
Metonymy
Referring to something by using the name of a closely related object.
Synecdoche
Using a part of something to represent the whole (or vice versa).
Symbolism
When a concrete object represents an abstract idea.
Personification
Giving human qualities to non-human things.
Apostrophe
Addressing a person, object, or idea that is absent or not alive as if it were present.
Paradox
A statement that seems contradictory but is true. A contradictory statement, especially one that illuminates a deeper truth.
Oxymoron
A two-word contradiction.
Hyperbole
Extreme exaggeration used for emphasis.
Understatement
Saying less than what the situation calls for.
