RBC antigen
A glycolipid or protein expressed on the surface of red blood cells that can activate the immune system when recognized as foreign (often recognized as foreign due to a mismatched transfusion)
Antibodies
Proteins in the blood that attack and bind to foreign antigens on RBCs, causing them to clump if the blood type is incompatible
Agglutination
The clumping of RBCs caused by antibodies binding to their antigens

Transfusion reaction
An immune response that occurs when a person receives blood with antigens their body has antibodies against (mismatched blood)
Agglutination
After a transfusion reaction happens, what does it cause?
AB+
What blood type is known as the "universal recipient"?
antibodies
If a person receives donor blood that does not match their blood type, the recipient's ___ will recognize the donor's antigens as foreign and bind to them.
True
True or false: The A, B, and Rh antigens must be tested before transfusion because they trigger strong immune responses
Transfusion reactions
Can cause:
1. Clogging of blood vessels
2. Destruction of RBCs
3. Kidney damage
