French-Indian War
Conflict between the French who were allied with Native American Tribes and British Colonists. Caused by territorial disputes in the Ohio-River valley. Ended with France being expelled from North America and Great Britain gaining control over places in Canada and Northwest America. However, Great Britain started to heavily tax American Colonists to cover the costs of the war.
Albany Congress of 1754
Delegates from several British Colonies met to discuss a more organized colonial response to frontier defense, trade, and westward expansion.
Quartering Act of 1765
kept British Soldiers stationed in American colonies, colonists responsible for soldiers food and housing.
Proclamation Line of 1763
Established by British Parliament to prevent further conflict with Native Americans. Forbade colonists from migrating west.
Stamp Act of 1765
British Parliament imposed taxes on all paper goods in the American Colonies. Overthrown in 1766.
Currency Act of 1764
Prevented Colonial Legislatures in America from printing paper money.
Boston Massacre of 1770
Confrontation in Boston where 9 British Soldiers shot and killed several people in a crowd of 300 to 400 people who were harassing them.
Boston Tea Party of 1773
Since British Parliament gave the East India Company a monopoly on tea in American Colonies which led to heavier taxation, around 50 men of the Sons of Liberty destroyed a shipment of tea from the East India Company by tossing the barrels overboard.
Declaration of Independence of 1776
Document which severed the 13 colonies connection with Great Britain, and led to the American Revolutionary War.
Battle of Yorktown of 1781
Supported by French military forces, Washington and the Continental Army dealt the British a decisive blow and forced their surrender.
Paris Peace Treaty of 1783
Ended the American Revolution and declared the 13 colonies as independent from Britain.
Northwest Ordinance of 1787
Abolished slavery in the northwest territory, and provided means for which northwestern territories could get a population and apply for statehood.
Shay’s Rebellion
Violent insurrection in Massachusetts brought about by a debt crisis and increased taxation. One of the main examples of the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation as there were no Federal Troops to help solve the insurrection.
Federalist Papers
Authored by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, were a series of stories published into the news to push people to support the ratification of the constitution.
