Blood Pressure
The force exerted by circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels.
Vena Cava
The large vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the body back to the right atrium of the heart.
Resistance to Flow
The opposition to blood flow, primarily determined by the radius of blood vessels.
Sarcoplasmic Reticulum
An organelle that stores calcium ions, which play a crucial role in muscle contraction.
Parasympathetic Nervous System
The part of the autonomic nervous system that calms the body and slows heart rate.
Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP)
The average arterial pressure during a single cardiac cycle.
Arterioles
Small blood vessels that regulate blood flow and pressure by constricting or dilating.
Hemostasis
The process that prevents and stops bleeding, or hemorrhage.
Red Blood Cells
Cells that transport oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood.
Coagulation Cascade
A series of steps involving activation of coagulation factors leading to blood clot formation.
Intercalated Disk
A specialized connection between cardiac muscle cells that includes gap junctions.
End-Diastolic Volume (EDV)
The amount of blood in the ventricles at the end of diastole, right before contraction.
Frank Starling’s Law
The principle that the strength of the heart's contraction is directly related to the volume of blood filling the heart.
Sympathetic Nervous System
The part of the autonomic nervous system that increases heart rate and myocardial contractility.
