Solvent
The substance that dissolves the solute, such as water in salt water.
Solute
The substance that is dissolved in a solvent, such as salt in salt water.
Soluble
Refers to a substance that can be dissolved.
Insoluble
Refers to a substance that cannot be dissolved.
Saturated solution
A solution that cannot dissolve more solute.
Unsaturated solution
A solution that can still dissolve more solute.
Supersaturated solution
A solution that has more solute than it can theoretically hold.
Dilute
To decrease the concentration of a solution by adding more solvent.
Concentrated solution
A solution that has a higher amount of solute compared to another solution.
Alloy
A solution of two metals melted together, such as steel.
Suspension
A temporary mixture where particles eventually settle and can be filtered.
Colloid
A mixture with larger particles, which do not settle and may exhibit the Tyndall effect.
Tyndall effect
The scattering of light as it passes through a colloid.
Homogeneous mixture
A mixture that is uniform at the molecular level.
