Celiac disease: lacks the enzyme to break down gluten. Body overreacts and vili in the small intestine are damaged. lots of inflammation
Gluten intolerance: all the S+S but don’t have damage to small intestine
Difference between gluten intolerance and celiac disease:
steatorrhea
fat in stool
bigger, frothier, may have undigested food particles
stool for pt with celiac:
Cannot absorb vitamins and the iron
why can celiac patients become anemic?
The digestive system loses rotein

Vitamin K deficiency
why might celiac patients have prolonged prothrombin time?
mucosal biopsy via colonoscopy
invasive diagnosis of celiac:
cut out gluten for 2 weeks, then slowly reintroduce. If S+S come back, then celicac.
non-invasive diagnosis for celiac:
2 weeks

iron and milk:
pallor
fatigue
irritability
weak
cold hands and feet
nail bed deformities (prolonged)
tachycardia
heart murmur

mcv
serum ferritin
serum iron-binding capacity
lab values that can diagnose iron deficiency anemia: [4]
relying on memory and honesty from parents/kids
why is dietary history not accurate to diagnose iron deficiency anemia?
it helps convert iron from ferritin to hemoglobin

more protein

high iron

dark greens
red meat
beans/lentils
nuts
seeds
eggs
seafood
foods high in iron: [7]

every few weeks/ month
how often to get bloodwork for iron deficiency anemia
twice daily
how often to take iron pills
