Citizenship
how residents live in a particular area with previously agreed upon rights & responsibilities
Rights
any lawful, social, or moral principles of autonomy or entitlement
Duty
an obligation to perform an action based on the laws, social norms, or a moral standard
Global Citizenship
the belief that all people have rights & civic responsibilities based on the reason that they reside in this world
Three categories of global citizenship
• Open global citizenship
• moral global citizenship
• sociopolitical global citizenship
open global citizenship
believes that nations still exist and differ from one another
Moral global citizenship
focuses on the ethical aspect of global citizenship
Sociopolitical global citizenship
emphasizes the social & governmental systems & structure around the world
Three types of rights
Civil rights, political rights, social rights
Civil rights
are entitlement provided by a certain locality to its public constituents (e.g.freedom of speech)
Political Rights
are administrative entitlements provided by a specific government (e.g the right to be elected)
Social Rights
are entitlements related to public services & social protection (e.g insurance, housing, welfare & pensions)
Types of Duties
Conscription, Taxation, & Participation
Conscription
pertains to the obligation to register as reserve force in the army
Taxation
Relates to the duty to a compulsory contribution to a state
Participation
refers to the obligation to take part in the community (e.g general clean-up)
