What are the basic hardware components of the internet?

Host, server, router, Link layer switch, modem

What is the difference between host and end systems? What types of end systems are there? Is a web server an end system?

They are the same. PCs, web servers, etc

What is bandwidth?

Different links send data at different rates

What is a packet?

When hosts send data to eachother, the sender segments it into packets

In terms of services, what is the internet?

A network infrastructure that provides services to network applications

What do network protocols define?

1. Format of messages

2. Order of messages

3. Action taken on message transmission and receipt

What is an access network?

The one that physically connects end systems to the edge router on the internet

What is a packet-switched network?

Transmits data by breaking it down into packets

Store and forward feature- packet is stored in router until it fully arrives

What’s the difference between packet-switch and circuit-switch?

In circuit networks the resources on the path are reserved, packet networks use them on demand

What is the internet backbone?

The network of ISP routers

What do internet service providers/ISPs provide?

Internet access and domain name registration
