What is the Architecture Alternatives & Trade-Offs method in TOGAF?
A technique to evaluate, compare, and select between multiple valid target architectures based on defined criteria.
Why are architecture alternatives important?
Because multiple solutions may satisfy the vision and requirements, but each has trade-offs; not all needs can be met with one option.
What are the 3 main steps in the trade-off method?
Select criteria
Define alternatives
Evaluate and choose or combine
What criteria are typically used to evaluate alternatives?
Cost, performance, scalability, time, vendor risk, interoperability, etc.
What stakeholder benefits come from presenting alternatives?
Reveals hidden agendas
Surfaces new requirements or principles
Promotes transparency and engagement
Where in TOGAF is this method explained in more detail?
In the Architecture Content section of the TOGAF Fundamental Content.
What should all architecture alternatives have in common?
They must conform to the architecture vision, principles, and requirements, even if they offer different trade-offs.
What can the trade-off process reveal beyond architecture choices?
It can uncover misaligned stakeholder priorities, unspoken constraints, or gaps in requirements.
