Kinetic Molecular Theory
Matter is made of particles that are in constant motion
The amount of kinetic energy in a substance is related to its temperature.
There is space between particles that is related to its state of matter.
Phase changes happen when the temperature of the substance changes sufficiently.
There are attractive forces in between particles called intermolecular forces. The strength of these forces increase as particles get closer together.
Intramolecular Forces
are forces that holds atom together WITHIN a molecule
Intermolecular Forces
forces that exist BETWEEN molecules
London Dispersion Forces
intermolecular forces of attraction that exist between all atoms and molecules and are present among symmetrical nonpolar substances
Dipole-dipole Forces
are attractive forces between the positive end of one molecule and the negative end of another
