Location
The position of a place on Earth, often given by latitude and longitude.
Place
The physical and human-made characteristics that make a location unique.
Regions
Areas that share common characteristics.
Movement
How and why people move and are connected (migration, trade, communication).
Human Environment Interaction
The relationship between people and their environment; how people adapt, depend on, or modify the environment.
Boundary
A line or border that marks the limits of a region or area, often influenced by perception.
Hinterland
The area surrounding a city that is influenced by it; the suburb.
Functional Region
A region organized around a city-centered system of interaction.
Formal Region
A uniform area where everyone shares common traits (language, climate, political system).
Population Agglomerations
Large clusters of people living in cities and surrounding areas; a large share of the world’s population lives in these clusters.
East Asia (cluster)
A population agglomeration in East Asia including areas from Korea to Vietnam and China.
South Asia (cluster)
A population agglomeration including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, mainly along the Ganges and Indus rivers.
Europe (cluster)
A population agglomeration from Britain to Russia and Italy to France; many people live near minerals or in cities.
East North America (cluster)
A population agglomeration from Canada to Florida to the Mississippi River; forming a megacity corridor.
Southeast Asia (cluster)
Islands between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, including the Philippines and Indonesia; a large population cluster.
Megalopolis
A region made up of several large cities and their surrounding areas in sufficient proximity to form a single urban complex.
Religion (conflict)
Conflicts arising from religious differences or competition.
Nationalism (conflict)
Pride in one’s country and support for its interests, sometimes at the expense of others.
Political Conflict
Fights between political parties or groups based on policies/ideologies (may include ethnic or regional conflicts).
Modern Development Political (conflict)
Conflicts related to modern development projects and changes (e.g., dam projects, geopolitical implications of modernization).
Economic Conflict
Conflicts over money and resources, often pitting rich against poor or nations with unequal wealth.
Culture
Shared patterns of behaviors and interactions learned through socialization.
Beliefs
Religious or political convictions held by a group.
Institutions
Governmental or legal structures that organize society.
Technology
Tools and systems that improve or simplify human life.
Diffusion
The movement of an innovation or idea through a single society by spreading and relocation.
Acculturation
When one culture changes through contact with another culture.
Urbanization
The process of people moving from rural areas to cities.
Industrialization
The use of machines to produce goods on assembly lines.
Agriculture
Raising crops or animals for food and other products.
Subsistence
Traditional production aimed at meeting the basic needs of a family or community.
Commercial
Production aimed at selling goods for profit.
