5.4 UNWRITTEN VOWELS AND SILENCED CONSONANTS

1. The unwritten vowel โ - ะ

The short vowel โ - ะ goes unwritten when there is a final consonant as already introduced in lesson 2. The syllable can be live or dead depending on the final consonant.

2. The unwritten vowel - อ

When ร appears right after the initial consonant, and the vowel is not written, that unwritten vowel is /ɔː/ (- อ). With this unwritten vowel, the syllable is always live.

3. The unwritten vowel – ะ

You have learned in lesson 1 that the short vowel – ะ /a/ can take two forms: – ะ and ั . In many words, – ะ it is not written at all.

SILENCED CONSONANTS

A consonant or a group of consonants become silent when the mark ์ ทัณฑฆาต /thanthakhâːt/ is used. Most of the time, when you see a word with ์ , be aware that only the final consonant that appears right after the vowel is pronounced. The consonant(s) that is silenced is called a การันต /kaːran/ consonant.
