Woody Plants
Long-lived perennials, shrubs, and trees that exhibit secondary growth.
Secondary Growth
Growth that results in an increase in the width or girth of the plant, primarily occurring in woody plants.
Vascular Cambium
A lateral meristem that divides to produce xylem (to the inside) and phloem (to the outside).
Cork Cambium
Also known as phellogen, a lateral meristem that produces cork (phellem) and phelloderm.
Periderm
The protective outer layer of the plant, including cork, cork cambium, and phelloderm.
Bark
All tissues outside the vascular cambium, including inner bark (functional and nonfunctional phloem) and outer bark (periderm and old phloem).
Lenticels
Interruptions in the periderm that allow for gas exchange.
Tree Rings
Annual growth rings that can be counted to determine the age of a tree.
Xylem
Vascular tissue responsible for the transport of water and nutrients; produced inside the vascular cambium.
Phloem
Vascular tissue responsible for the transport of sugars and nutrients; produced outside the vascular cambium.
