Inflammatory mediators fire as they should but aggressive and sterile effusion is accumulated in the lungs

Atelectasis

Bronchial obstruction caused by retained secretions of decreased lung volumes or pressures outside the lungs preventing air sacs from inflating

• Decreased breath sounds

• Decreased O2 sat

Pneumonia infection spreads from the lungs to the pericardium around the heart through the bloodstream

Meningitis

Bacteria can affect the meninges and inflame the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord

Endocarditis

Bacteria travels through the blood to the heart’s endocardium/inner lining of the heart and causes a fatal infection

• Causes valvular failure and death
