Jamestown
England's first permanent colony in North America; founded in 1606 in what is now Virginia. Key people: John Smith, John Rolfe, Pocahontas, and Chief Powhatan.
cash crop
A plant that is grown for making money. Example: tobacco in Jamestown.
demand
The level of need for something. Example: this was high for tobacco in early Jamestown.
New England Colonies
Settlements established by English religious dissenters along the coast of the north-east of North America between 1620-1640. It included the current-day states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Key groups: Pilgrims, Puritans, Wampanoag Tribe.
covenant
A contract or agreement.
dissension
Disagreement between members of a group over an important issue.
House of Burgesses
The first representative government set up by Europeans in the Americas, established by the Virginia Company at Jamestown in 1619.
export
To send (goods or services) to another country for sale.
The Mayflower Compact
The first agreement for self-government in America. It set up a government for the Plymouth colony.
Indentured Servants
Colonists who received free passage to North America in exchange for working without pay for a certain number of years
Puritans and Pilgrims
English religious dissenters who settled in North America in 1620 to establish their own colonies, called "New England."
Pocahontas and John Rolfe
An Indian and English couple whose marriage brought peace to Jamestown.
tobacco
The cash crop that was most produced in Jamestown. It was grown on plantations which then required slave labor.
