Tuina (推拿)
Hands-on bodywork in Traditional Chinese Medicine using various manipulations to achieve a therapeutic effect; literally means 'push-grasp'.
Dao Yin An Qiao (导引按跷)
Ancient designation for Tuina in Huang Di Nei Jing; translates to guiding and pressing/lifting techniques used in manipulation.
Eight Therapeutic Methods of Tuina (八法)
The eight core Tuina techniques: warming, dredging, invigorating, purging, sweating, harmonizing, dispersing, and clearing.
Warming (温法)
A Tuina method for treating cold-deficiency syndromes by applying warming techniques.
Dredging (通法)
A Tuina method to treat qi and blood stagnation by clearing obstructions in meridians.
Invigorating (补法)
A Tuina method to treat deficiencies in qi, blood, yin, or yang.
Purging (泻法)
A Tuina method to treat lower-jiao excess syndromes by removing excess.
Sweating (汗法)
A Tuina method to treat exterior syndromes from wind- cold/wind-heat by inducing sweating.
Harmonizing (和法)
A Tuina method for Shaoyang half-exterior half-interior syndromes or improperly treated exterior conditions.
Dispersing (散法)
A Tuina method to treat accumulation syndromes due to pathogenic factors or qi/blood stagnation.
Clearing (清法)
A Tuina method to treat heat syndromes caused by pathogenic heat or fire.
Zheng Qi (正气)
The body's righteous/ protective energy that supports health and resists disease.
Pathogenic Qi (邪气)
Disease-causing factors that invade the body and are expelled or transformed by therapy.
Yin & Yang (阴阳)
Foundational TC M principle describing dynamic balance of opposing yet complementary forces.
Zang Fu Organs (脏腑)
The internal organ system in TCM; Zang (yin) and Fu (yang) organs with distinct functions.
Meridians & Collaterals (经络)
Energy channels and networks through which qi and blood flow in the body.
Ointment Tuina
Use of topical ointments during Tuina to lubricate the skin and enhance absorption of therapeutic ingredients.
Gao Mo (膏摩)
Rubbing with ointment; a media used to aid Tuina manipulations and improve penetration.
Tou Feng (头风)
Headache caused by wind; traditionally treated with Tuina and related media.
Jin Gui Yao Lue (金贵要略)
The Important Summaries of the Golden Cabinet; Han Dynasty treatise by Zhang Zhongjing; includes Tuina-related guidance and techniques.
Wintergreen Oil (冬青油)
Methyl salicylate-based oil used in Tuina to relieve swelling, reduce pain, and disperse wind and cold.
Sesame Oil (麻油) / Vegetable Oil
