Gland
A structure that produces and secretes a chemical product.
Avascular
Lacking blood vessels between tightly packed cells in epithelial tissue.
Endocrine gland
Gland that releases its products directly into the bloodstream; hormones are produced here.
Exocrine gland
Gland that releases products into an exiting duct; not hormones.
Unicellular exocrine gland
An exocrine gland formed by a single cell (e.g., goblet cell).
Multicellular exocrine gland
An exocrine gland formed by more than one cell; can be structurally and functionally classified.
Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
Stratified squamous epithelium that contains keratin, giving the epidermis its toughness.
Non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
Stratified squamous epithelium without keratin; found in wet areas (cheeks, esophagus, vaginal canal) and resists abrasion.
Stratified squamous epithelium
Epithelium with multiple cell layers; top layer is flattened (squamous) for protection.
Stratified cuboidal epithelium
Several layers with the top layer cuboidal; a rare epithelial type; found in excretory ducts of sweat glands.
Stratified columnar epithelium
Several layers with the top layer columnar; a rare epithelial type; found in the excretory ducts of salivary glands and in the male urethra.
Transitional epithelium
Epithelium that transitions from a relaxed to stretched state; lines the urinary bladder and ureter.
Urinary bladder
Organ whose wall is lined by transitional epithelium and that stretches as it fills with urine.
Ureter
Tube that transports urine from the kidney to the urinary bladder and is lined by transitional epithelium.
Goblet cell
Unicellular exocrine gland that secretes mucus.
Mucus
Secreted mucus produced by goblet cells and other glands.
Sweat glands
Exocrine glands that secrete sweat through ducts.
Ceruminous glands
Exocrine glands that produce earwax (cerumen) in the ear canal.
Salivary glands
Exocrine glands that secrete saliva into ducts.
Pancreas (endocrine secretions)
Endocrine secretions: insulin and glucagon.
Pancreas (exocrine secretions)
Exocrine secretions: pancreatic enzymes.
Hormones
Chemical products released directly into the bloodstream by endocrine glands.
Major endocrine glands (PTSP)
Parathyroid, Thyroid, Suprarenal (adrenal), and Pituitary glands.
