Emergent properties
Properties of a system that arise from the interactions and arrangement of its parts and cannot be predicted from the individual components.
Systems biology
The field that models the behavior of biological systems by analyzing interactions among their parts.
Antifungal compounds in wood
Substances produced within wood (as in redwood) that prevent fungi from digesting the wood, helping the trunk stay solid.
Fungal decay
The process by which fungi digest wood, leading to internal deterioration and potential structural failure.
Organization (pattern of arrangement)
The pattern by which components are arranged within a system, which can lead to emergent properties and different behaviors.
Modeling
Creating mathematical or computational representations to simulate and analyze the behavior of a system.
IPCC
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a UN body that assesses climate science and informs policy.
Climate change
Long-term changes in Earth's climate (temperature, precipitation, etc.) studied and reported by bodies like the IPCC.
