What are the phases of the Moon?
The phases of the Moon are the different shapes the Moon appears to have when viewed from Earth, determined by the Moon's position relative to the Sun and Earth.
New Moon
The Moon is between the Earth and the Sun; the side of the Moon facing us is not illuminated.
Waxing Crescent
A sliver of the Moon becomes visible after the New Moon, growing (waxing) from right to left.
First Quarter
Half of the Moon's face is illuminated. It appears as a half circle.
