Causality
Relation between an event (cause) & a 2nd event (effect), where the 1st event is responsible for the 2nd.
Nationalism
Strong loyalty to one's country united / strengthened nations, but also led to conflict among nations so close together
Imperialism
Desire to build empires led to increased tensions as European powers competed for territories abroad.
Militarism
High regard for military might; if one nation increases military, others follow suit.
Conscription
Government requires citizens to serve in the military.
Alliances
Agreements among nations to help one another in the event of war.
Triple Alliance
Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.
Triple Entente
Great Britain, France, and Russia.
South Slavs
Serbs, Bosnians, Croats, & Slovenes made up of.
Mobilization
Gathering & movement of troops.
Trench warfare
Each side dug themselves into the ground (trenches) protected by barbed wire during war.
Stalemate
Neither side can gain advantage over the other.
Total War
Entire societies (not just armies) involved in fighting / War-Effort.
Propaganda
Biased, government-controlled information to control citizens' thinking about the war.

Blockade
British Navy prevented goods from leaving or entering German ports
Reparations
Payments for War damages.
Genocide
Deliberate killing of an ethnic group.
