Polyps

- Growths of tissue in the mucosa of the gastric area
- Sessile - flat, or raised and bump-like
- Precancerous lesions
- Most do no develop into invasive neoplasms

Types

- Neoplastic
- Non-neoplastic

Neoplastic Types

- Adenomas - Pre-cancerous
- Carcinomas - Cancerous
- 2/3 of these cases are adenomas that have turned into carcinomas

Non-neoplastic Types

- Benign growths
--> Mucosal
--> Hyperplastic

Neoplastic Polyps - Adenomatous

- Common in MEN*
- Proximal Colon --> close to rectum
- Risk increases with age

Non-neoplastic Polyps

- Occur in 80%* of the population
- Frequency INCREASES with age*

Clinical Manifestations

- *RECTAL BLEEDING*
--> NO mucous but presence of blood may be a polyp
- LOWER abdominal pain
- Obstruction

Diagnosis

- H&P
- Double contrast barium enema
- Sigmoidoscopy
- Colonoscopy

H&P

- History and physical
- Other GI problems and presence of cancer

- Looking for potential polyps
- May not show up because its barium
- Rules out if its diverticulosis* - to see outpouching

Sigmoidoscopy

- In through the rectum and the sigmoid colon
- Looking for polyps and UC
--> Sigmoid colon is the most common site for diverticulitis

- WHOLE colon
- R/F perforation is greater as opposed to sigmoidoscopy

Treatment

- Cauterize the polyps and remove*
- Post-op considerations
--> small streaks of blood with next bowel movement
