The 27 Amendments

First

Guarantees the right to freedoms of speech, press, and religion. Protects the right to petition the government.

Second

Right for people to keep and bear arms for their own defense.

Third

Citizens cannot be forced to quarter soldiers during time of peace

Fourth

Citizens cannot subject themselves to seizure and search without a warrant and cause

Fifth

No abuse of government authority in legal procedures. Protect citizens from self-incrimination and double jeopardy.

Sixth

Fair and speedy judge trial and rights to know accusation, accuser, and to find counsel and witness.

Seventh

Reserve individual rights to jury trial depending on the case

Eighth

Forbid bails and fines and punishment that is cruel

Ninth

Reserve the rights of US Citizens that are not explicitly mentioned in the US Constitution

Tenth

Reserve powers that are not given to US Government under the Constitution, nor prohibited to a state of the US

Eleventh

States are protected from suits by citizens living in another state/foreigners that do not reside within state borders.

Twelfth

Modifies and clarifies the procedure for electing president and vice president

Thirteenth

Except as punishment for criminal offense, forbids forced-slavery and indentured servitutde

Fourteenth

Details Equal protection clause, Due Process Clause, Citizenship clause, clause dealing with Confederacy and its officials.

Fifteenth

Reserve citizens the right to suffrage regardless of race

Sixteenth

Reserves the US Government the right to tax income

Seventeenth

Establishes popular voting as the process under which senators are selected

Eighteenth

Denies the sale and consumption of alcohol

Nineteenth

Reserves the rights of women’s suffrage

Twentieth

Establishes date of term starts for congress and the President (lame duck amendment)

Twenty first

Details of the repeal of the eighteenth amendment. State laws over alcohol are to remain.

Twenty second

Limit the terms that an individual can be elected as president (two terms). Individuals who have served over two years of someone else’s term cannot be elected again.

Twenty third

Reserve the right of Citizens in the District of Columbia to choose their own electors in Presidential elections

Twenty fourth

Citizens cannot be denied suffrage for not paying tax.

Twenty fifth

Establishes the procedure for successor of a president

Twenty sixth

Reserve the right for citizens 18 and above the right to vote

Twenty seventh

Denies any laws that vary the salaries of Congress members until the beginning of the next terms of office for Representatives.
