Gate control theory

The theory that the spinal cord contains a neurological "gate" that blocks pain signals or allows them to pass to the brain.

Phantom limb

The ability to feel sensations or pain in a limb that no longer exists.

Vestibular sense

The sense of body movement and position, including balance.

Semicircular canals

Three looped structures in the inner ear that detect head movements and provide a sense of equilibrium.

Kinesthesis

The system for sensing the position and movement of individual body parts.

Warm/cold receptors

Sensory receptors in the skin that detect temperature changes.

Sensory Interaction

The principle that one sense may influence another, such as how the smell of food can enhance its taste.
