6. Describe how Solomon Asch investigated conformity through the judging of lengths of lines. Be precise (i.e. describe procedure, “magic number”, unanimity…).

In Asch’s study, participants judged line lengths in a group of confederates who gave clearly wrong answers.

  • The "magic number" for maximum conformity was 3 confederates giving wrong answers.

  • Unanimity increased conformity—when all confederates agreed, participants were more likely to conform.

  • When even one confederate gave the correct answer, conformity dropped significantly.
The study showed people conform even when the group is obviously wrong.
