6. Describe how Solomon Asch investigated conformity through the judging of lengths of lines. Be precise (i.e. describe procedure, “magic number”, unanimity…).
In Asch’s study, participants judged line lengths in a group of confederates who gave clearly wrong answers.
The "magic number" for maximum conformity was 3 confederates giving wrong answers.
Unanimity increased conformity—when all confederates agreed, participants were more likely to conform.
When even one confederate gave the correct answer, conformity dropped significantly.
The study showed people conform even when the group is obviously wrong.
