Solid
A state of matter that holds its shape and has a fixed volume.
Liquid
A state of matter that takes the shape of its container but has a fixed volume.
Gas
A state of matter that takes the shape and volume of its container.
Evaporation
The process by which a liquid turns into a gas.
Condensation
The process by which a gas turns into a liquid.
Sublimation
The process of a solid turning directly into a gas without becoming a liquid first.
Diffusion
The process by which particles spread from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Kinetic Theory
A theory that states all molecules or atoms in a fluid are in constant, random motion.
Brownian Motion
The random motion of very small particles suspended in a fluid, observed under a microscope.
Solubility
The ability of a substance to dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a specific temperature.
Solvent
A substance that dissolves a solute to form a solution.
Solute
A substance that is dissolved in a solvent.
Solution
A homogeneous mixture composed of two or more substances.
Saturated Solution
A solution that cannot dissolve any more solute at a given temperature.
