Motherboard
The primary circuit board that allows hardware components to connect and communicate with each other.
PC Bus
Electrical pathways, or lines, that transfer data and instructions on a motherboard. More pathways result in higher performance.
Northbridge Chipset
Also called “Memory Controller Hub”. Connects the CPU to high speed components such as RAM, display, and high-speed PCIe expansion slots.
Southbridge Chipset
Also known as the “I/O Hub”. Links the CPU through the Northbridge to lower speed expansion slots and ports such as Ethernet, Audio, USB and SATA.
Direct Media Interface
A bus that allows communication between the CPU and the Platform Controller Hub (on modern motherboards) acting as a link between the two.
Platform Controller Hub (PCH)
Parts of the Northbridge chipset were integrated into the Southbridge chipset and renamed.
