Blastocyst
The structure formed in the early development of mammals, after the fertilization of an egg, consisting of an inner cell mass and an outer layer.
Endometrium
The inner lining of the uterus, which thickens during the menstrual cycle and is involved in implantation.
Implantation
The attachment of the blastocyst to the uterine wall, leading to the development of pregnancy.
Trophoblast
The outer layer of cells in the blastocyst that contributes to placenta formation.
Syncytiotrophoblast
The outer multinucleated layer of the trophoblast that invades the uterine tissue during implantation.
Cytotrophoblast
The inner layer of the trophoblast that contributes to the formation of the placenta.
Amniotic cavity
The space that surrounds the developing embryo, filled with amniotic fluid, providing protection and support.
Chorionic gonadotropins
Hormones secreted by the trophoblast that help maintain the corpus luteum during early pregnancy.
Decidual cells
Modified stromal cells in the endometrium that provide support and nourishment to the implanted embryo.
Ectopic implantation
An implantation that occurs outside the normal uterine location, often resulting in complications.
