French L'imparfait

(Excuse the lack of accent marks, my laptop can’t write them)

The French L’imparfait is formed by taking the stem of a word (I’ll use jouer for this example, so the stem is “jou”) and adding the l’imparfait endings depending on subject as follows:

Je = stem + ais Nous = stem + ions

Tu = stem + ais Vous = stem + iez

Il/Elle/On = ait Ils/Elles = stem + aient

SO for the example verb it would be conjugated like so:

Je jouais Nous jouions

Tu jouais Vous jouiez

Il jouait Ils jouaient

The french l’imparfait is typically used when referring to a recurring thing in one’s past (for example “I used to play with dolls = Je jouais a la poupee” )

If you ever have trouble finding the proper stem of the word to use, first conjugate it in present Nous form (example; if you’re trying to find the stem of voir, first conjugate it in present “Nous voyons”, then you remove the ons, that’s you’re stem!) this applies for every stem, regardless of what subject you’re using it for (say you’re trying to find the stem of jouer to make a sentence using Je, you would still use the Nous method to determine it!)

Good luck :)!
