Airworthiness Directives (ADs)
Mandatory notifications that may require repairs or alterations to maintain aircraft safety.
BasicMed
An alternative to holding an FAA Medical License for pilots, allowing them to fly under specific conditions.
Incipient Spin
The initial stage of a spin following a stall before a full spin occurs.
NOTAM (Notice to Airmen)
A notification providing essential information about airspace and airport operations.
Spatial Disorientation
Loss of awareness of the position and orientation of an aircraft in space, often leading to dangerous flight situations.
Hazardous Attitudes
Personal traits or mindsets that can lead to poor decision-making in aviation; includes Anti Authority, Invincibility, Impulsivity, Macho, and Resignation.
VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range)
A type of radio navigation system for aircraft that allows pilots to determine their position and stay on course.
Recurrent Training (BFR)
A mandatory Biennial Flight Review required every 24 calendar months to maintain pilot certification.
Decompression Sickness
A condition caused by the rapid release of nitrogen from the body at high altitudes, resulting in bubbles that can block blood vessels.
Runway Incursions
Incidents where an aircraft, vehicle, or person enters a runway without authorization, posing a collision risk.
Angle of Attack (AoA)
The angle between the wing's chord line and the direction of the oncoming air, critical for lift generation.
Lift
The aerodynamic force that directly opposes the weight of an aircraft and holds the aircraft in the air.
Torque Effect
The tendency of an aircraft to rotate in the opposite direction of its engine's rotation, most pronounced at low speeds.
Manifest
A comprehensive list of all individuals aboard an aircraft, often required for commercial operations.
Hypoxia
A condition resulting from insufficient oxygen supply to the body, commonly experienced at high altitudes.
Weight & Balance
The calculation of the distribution of weight within an aircraft to ensure safe and effective flight performance.
Transponder
A device in the aircraft that transmits information about the plane's location to air traffic control.
Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT)
A device that automatically transmits a signal in the event of an aircraft accident, aiding search and rescue operations.
Pilotage
Navigating by reference to visible landmarks, contrasted with dead reckoning, which relies on calculations.
Moment
The product of weight and distance from a reference point, affecting the aircraft's balance and center of gravity.
Graveyard Spiral
A situation in which a pilot inadvertently enters a prolonged spiral descent, often due to loss of situational awareness.
Cirrus Cloud
A type of high-altitude cloud that indicates moisture in the upper atmosphere, often related to storms.
Static Wicks
Devices installed on aircraft to discharge static electricity, preventing radio interference.
