• Controls all but one variable when attempting to answer a scientific question.

• Only changes one variable, allowing the person conducting the test to know that no other variable has affected the results of the test.

• Allows only the independent variable to affect the dependent variable.

• Can usually be achieved by keeping all other variables constant.
