• Formed from sediments of broken rock that are cemented together to form a new rock

• Visible layers are often present

• limestone

• Formed by the melting or cooling of magma or lava

• Air pockets or crystals are often present

• basalt & granite

3 kinds of rocks: Metamorphic

• Formed when rock is changed due to heat, pressure or chemical reactions

• Often have banding or stripes

• marble

Rock Cycle

• Describes how the 3 types of rock transform/change from one to another

2 kings or Igneous: Intrusive Igneous

• Forms when magma cools and solidifies beneath earth’s surface creating large crystals

• cools very slowly

• granite

2 kinds of Igneous: Extrusive Igneous

• Forms when lava (magma that has been erupted) cools and solidifies on earth’s surface

• cools very quickly

• basalt
