Civil Rights Act of 1964*

After Johnson president, bill stuck in House Rules Committee - chairman Smith wanted to delay to get violence backlash and then public disapprove. Filibuster by Southern democrats ended when Humphrey garnered support and Dirksen modified. Made segregation/racism/discrimination illegal in public places.
