Creative Nonfiction
A genre of writing that uses literary styles and techniques to create factually accurate narratives.
The essential techniques used in literature, such as characterization, setting, plot, and theme.
Literary Elements
Language that creates sensory experiences and visual representations for the reader.
Imagery
Language that uses figures of speech to create images in the mind of the reader, beyond literal meanings.
Figurative Language
The central message or underlying idea of a literary work.
Theme
The perspective from which a story is told, including first-person, second-person, and third-person narratives.
Point of View
The process by which an author introduces and develops characters in a story.
Characterization
Written conversation between two or more characters.
Dialogue
The organization of the events in a story, typically including exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
Plot Structure
The writer’s attitude toward the subject or audience, conveyed through word choice and style.
Tone
Writing that is factual and informative, designed to explain or describe rather than entertain.
Nonfiction
A recurring element, theme, or idea in a literary work that has a symbolic significance.
Motif
A literary device that interrupts the chronological flow of a narrative to present past events.
Flashback
A literary device used to give hints or clues about what will happen later in the story.
