Life Processes
The basic functions performed by living organisms to maintain life.
Autotrophic Nutrition
Organisms that prepare their own food, e.g. green plants.
Heterotrophic Nutrition
Organisms that depend on other organisms for food, e.g. animals.
Holozoic Nutrition
Involves ingesting whole food material which is digested and absorbed.
Photosynthesis
The process of capturing light energy and transforming it into chemical energy.
Respiration
The process where food is burnt in cells using oxygen to release energy.
Anaerobic Respiration
Respiration that occurs in the absence of oxygen, resulting in less energy produced.
Peristalsis
The movement of food through the alimentary canal by muscular contractions.
Alimentary Canal
A long hollow tube containing organs through which food passes.
Oxygenated Blood
Blood rich in oxygen, transported from the lungs to the body.
Excretion
The process of removing waste products from the body.
Nephron
The structural and functional unit of the kidney responsible for filtering blood.
Transportation in Plants
Movement of water, minerals, and nutrients from one part of the plant to another.
Xylem
The tissue in plants responsible for conducting water and minerals from roots to leaves.
Phloem
The tissue in plants responsible for conducting food from leaves to all parts of the plant.
Double Circulation
A system in which blood is pumped through the heart twice for one cycle around the body.
Transpiration
The process of excess water vapor being released from plant leaves.
