Science and engineering Bridges Quiz Vocabulary
Abutment
A mass, as of masonry, receiving the arch, beam, truss, etc., at each end of a bridge. They receive and deliver forces in both horizontal and vertical directions.
arch bridge
A bridge that forms the shape of an arch compression from weight of stones
Beam
A long, rigid, horizontal support member of a structure.
Beam Bridge
A bridge that consists of beams sometimes supported by columns (piers, towers) support from below
Cassion
a large watertight chamber, open at the bottom from which the water is kept out by air pressure and in which construction work may be carried out under water.
cast iron
the crudest form of mined iron; brittle; does NOT react well to tension/compression poor choice for a building material. An iron alloy with a high carbon content
Column
A long, rigid, vertical (upright) support member of a structure. also called a tower
Compression
A pushing force that tends to shorten objects.
deck
The "top" of the bridge on which we drive or walk.
engineer
A person who applies her/his understanding of science and mathematics to creating things for the benefit of humanity and our world
member
An individual part or section of a larger structure such as a bridge
pier
The "column" of a bridge.
span
The length of a bridge between two piers. If no piers then abutments.
steel
an iron alloy with typically a few percent carbon( between that of cast iron and wrought iron) to improve its strength and fracture resistance
suspension bridge
A bridge in which the deck is hung from cables. support is from above
tension
A pulling or stretching force that tends to lengthen objects.
wrought iron
an iron alloy with a low carbon content
