The British Isles

The British Isles

is a group of islands situated off the northwestern corner of mainland Europe. It comprises Great Britain, Ireland, The Isle of Man, The Isles of Scilly, The Channel Islands, and over 6,000 other smaller islands. (Британські острови)

Great Britain

is the largest island in the British Isles that houses the countries of England, Scotland and Wales within its shores. (Великобританія)

The English Channel:

is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean that separates Southern England from northern France (Ла-Манш)

The UK:

is short for The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is sovereign and is made up of four countries; England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The name United Kingdom was adopted in 1801 when Ireland was brought into the union. (Обʼєднане королівство)

Eire:

is the name for Ireland in Irish (Ірландія)

Cardiff:

is the capital and largest city of Wales (Кардіфф)

Cymru:

is the modern Welsh name for themselves (Уельс)

Caledonia:

is a name used for Scotland, or for the northern part of Britain in ancient times (Каледонія)

Edinburgh:

is the capital city of Scotland (Единбург)

Belfast:

is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland (Белфаст)

Crown Dependencies:

are three island territories within the British Isles. these are the Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey which make up the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. The Crown Dependencies are not part of the United Kingdom but are self-governing possessions of the British Crown. (Коронні володіння)

Isle of Man:

is one of the British Isles, located in the Irish Sea off the northwest coast of England. The Isle of Man lies in the Irish Sea, roughly the same distance from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Isle of Man is not part of the United Kingdom but rather is a crown possession. (Острів Мен)

The Channel Islands:

are an archipelago in the English Channel off the Normandy coast of France. They are divided into two British Crown Dependencies, the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey. The Channel Islands are not part of the United Kingdom. They are dependent territories of the British Crown, as successor to the Dukes of Normandy. (Нормандські острови)

Union Jack:

the flag of the United Kingdom, consisting of the flag of England (a red cross on a white background), the flag of Scotland (a white saltire on a blue background), and the flag of Northern Ireland (a red saltire on a white background). (прапор Сполученого Королівства)

Order of the Garter:

the highest order of chivalry in the UK, founded in 1348 by King Edward III. (Орден Гартера)

Lake District:

a mountainous region in northwestern England, known for its stunning natural beauty and popular with hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. (Озерний край)

Ben Nevis:

the highest mountain in the UK, located in Scotland's Grampian Mountains. (Бен-Невіс)

The Severn:

a river in western England and Wales, the longest river in the UK. (Северн)

Lough Neagh:

the largest lake in the British Isles, located in Northern Ireland. (Лох Ней)

Dover:

a town and major port on the southeastern coast of England, known for its famous white cliffs and historical significance as a gateway to Europe. (Дувр)

Gaelic:

a group of languages spoken in Ireland and Scotland, including Irish Gaelic (also known as Irish) and Scottish Gaelic. (гельська)

Caribbeans:

is a region of the Americas that consists of the Caribbean Sea, its islands and the surrounding coasts. (Кариби)

Asians:

are the people of Asia. The term may also refer to their descendants. (азіати)

The Pennines:

a range of hills and mountains that runs down the center of northern England, sometimes referred to as the ‘backbone of England’ (Пенніни)
