Combination Reaction
A type of reaction that involves the joining of two or more elements or compounds to produce a product with a different composition.
Decomposition Reaction
A reaction that produces two or more products from a single reactant.
Single Replacement Reaction
A replacement reaction where one atom replaces another in a compound, producing a new compound.
Double Replacement Reaction
A reaction where two compounds undergo a 'change in partners' by exchanging atoms.
Precipitation Reaction
Processes in which an insoluble solid called a precipitate forms when reactants are combined in an aqueous solution.
Neutralization Reaction
Processes in which an acid reacts with a base to yield water plus an ionic compound called a salt.
Acids
Substances that when dissolved create H+ ions (hydronium ions).
Bases
Substances that when dissolved create OH- ions (hydroxide ions).
Solubility
The amount of a compound that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a specified temperature.
Carbonate Neutralization Reaction
Reactions between an acid and a carbonate or bicarbonate, yielding water, a salt, and carbon dioxide.
