Louis VII. Tense relationship on a personal level, due to eleanor of aquitaine having married Louis before. And Henry had loads of sons, which louis didn’t= tensions.

In 1158, who was promised to Henry II’s son (young Henry), as part of a marriage agreement with France?

Margaret. This was Louis daughter, as a result of this marriage, he was able to obtain the vexin through dowry. Henry went to the Pope in order to speed up the marriage process, without Louis’ approval, which caused tension.

Where did Henry II unsuccessfully invade in 1159?

Toulouse. Louis visible presence at Toulouse, which made Henry back off, as Louis was Henry’s overlord, as he made homage to Louis. Henry still gained control over Cahors and Quercy, through the help of ally Alfonso II of Aragon, this shows that Toulouse invasion still had some benefits/not entirely unsuccessful.

The vexin. The vexin was important as it was the border region between France and Normandy which gave Henry the advantage/ greater control over the ile de France= Louis loses authority.

1,000 knights. Count of flanders made this treaty, as Louis was Overlord of Flanders, this shows that his authority was being undermined as the count and Henry did have a good relationship despite Louis’ tension with Henry.

In which part of Henry’s kingdom did he struggle to influence the Church?

In Normandy. Louis can exploit this division and use this to his advantage to gain influence over the Norman church in this area, in order to undermine Henry’s royal control. This becomes a struggle for Henry to retain influence over the church as the rest of Europe was under the authority/influence of the Pope.

Which one of Henry’s sons was married to Conan’s daughter?

Geoffrey. Marriage to Conans daughter, Constance. This was a forced marriage in order for Henry to gain control over Brittany, as Geoffrey becomes the Duke of Brittany, Henry’s control over Brittany is dependant on his relationship with his son. But also, now that Henry has Brittany, he has control over regions outside Normandy, meaning Normandy would not be surrounded, which would be advantageous for Normandy= good position.

Aquitaine. The nobles respected Henry’s authority, but they were largely independent, which meant that Henry didn’t have as much power as he could have had in Aquitaine.
