Abba
An Aramaic term of endearment that Jesus used during his agony in the garden to address God the Father.
Agape
Greek word used for “love.” Describes God’s total ‘self-gift’ of unconditional and infinite love.
Analogy
A literary device or genre used to express truths about God that cannot be fully expressed in human language.
Consubstantial
A term meaning “of the same substance” or “same nature” used to teach that Jesus is of the same substance or nature as the Father.
Dogma
The name given to divinity revealed truths proclaimed or taught by the Church’s magisterium; the faithful are obliged to believe these truths.
Doxology
A prayer of adoration giving glory to the Triune God, in which the three divine Persons are invoked.

From the Greek word “aikoumenē,” meaning “the whole world.” An Ecumenical Council of the Church is a gathering of all the bishops of the world in the exercise of their authority over the universal church.
