Smallpox
A highly contagious and dangerous viral disease caused by the Variola major virus, leading to high mortality and disfiguring scars.
Variolation
The predecessor to vaccination, where pus from a weak smallpox case was introduced to a non-immune person to induce a mild case of smallpox.
Vaccinia
The virus used in the smallpox vaccine, originally believed to be cowpox, but identified as a different virus altogether.
Ring Vaccination
A strategy for controlling disease outbreaks by vaccinating all individuals exposed to an infected person and those in surrounding areas to create a firewall.
Interferons
Proteins secreted by human cells to signal infection and inhibit viral replication, targeted by poxviruses to evade immune response.
Epidemiology
The study of how diseases spread and can be controlled in populations.
Measles Virus (MV)
A highly infectious virus that primarily infects humans, causing serious illness and lifelong immunity in survivors.
Herd Immunity
The protection from disease that occurs when a sufficient percentage of a population is immune, reducing transmission even among non-immune individuals.
Monkeypox
A viral disease similar to smallpox, causing renewed interest in smallpox vaccines due to its transmission and mortality risks.
Moral Debate
Discussions regarding the ethical implications of vaccination practices, including variolation and modern vaccination mandates.
Polio Wards
Hospitals or healthcare facilities specifically for treating polio patients, notably less common due to successful vaccination efforts.
Public Health Campaigns
Organized efforts to promote health measures, including vaccination campaigns during outbreaks to control disease spread.
Bifurcated Needle
An inexpensive needle designed to deliver the smallpox vaccine efficiently through the skin.
Autism Controversy
The debate surrounding alleged links between vaccines, particularly the MMR vaccine, and autism, largely debunked by scientific studies.
Vaccine Hesitancy
Reluctance or refusal to vaccinate despite availability of vaccines, influenced by various social and cultural factors.
